Crocheting - at Long Last!

Thank you SO much for all the lovely comments you left me on my last post.  They really cheered me up!  I’m so lucky to have such wonderful friends!!!  ♥

I had to go back to see the doctor again yesterday.  He said that the antibiotics I’d been taking hadn’t worked, and gave me some different ones.  So, fingers crossed, these ones will start to work their magic over the next few days.

Well, I’ve been a bit bored, just resting and not feeling up to doing much crafting.  But I do have ONE achievement I wanted to share with you.....

My first proper piece of crochet!!!

I don’t know why it’s taken me so long to catch on to crocheting.  I only wanted to make a granny square!!!  I have books for beginners, but couldn’t follow the instructions or diagrams at all.  I’ve watched countless YouTube videos.  These were more useful than the books, but I still couldn’t quite get in.  Then, on Monday night, my mother-in-law (who was visiting for Easter weekend) showed me what to do – and it clicked.  Hooray!!!

So, I spent Tuesday morning re-reading the instructions in my books and re-watching the You-Tube videos.  And they all made sense!  Eureka!!!  I made this.....

Tada!!!

Now I’ve got my granny square, though, I don’t know what to do with it.  Should I tie in the end bits and use it as a coaster?  Or should I keep going on this one – and turn it into a cushion cover or a little blanket?  Or make lots, fix them together and make something that way?  What do you think???  I’d be very grateful for any suggestions from you experts out there.

I have some other colours that I could use.....

I bought these from the Creativa exhibition (in Dortmund) a few weeks ago.  I loved the bright colours, and bought them to motivate myself to learn to crochet.  It worked!

I’m off to do some more crocheting now – I’m worried that I’ll forget if I stop for too long.....  ;-)

Hugs to you all,

Carly

  8. Hello sweet Carly! I am terribly sorry to hear you are still sick! I do hope the new antibiotics will be effective and you will be well soon! Do continue to take good care of yourself and rest! I love your granny square!!! You did a beautiful job! I am so glad your mother-in-law could show you what to do! I always learn best when someone can show me. Then, as you said, the books and videos make sense! I am teaching myself to crochet with the Cute and Easy Crochet book. I love her darling projects and I must say her instructions are very well written! I look forward to improving and need to get a new project going! I think you should make more squares and make a cushion! It would be so cheerful and cosy too! Have fun sweet friend and keep crocheting! Much love, Paula xo

  14. Hello chicklet,
Well done, your crochet is beautiful. I have no idea about it, I would tie myself in knots.
I think Of Bees and Mist is sort of similar to the Night Circus. I reckon you will like it. Did you ever read 'Jonathon Strange and Mr Norrell'? That is all magical and lovely too, quite long though. I also like 'HerFearful Symmetry' by Audrey Niffenegger. Lots of people slagged it off but I really liked it.
Keep resting and taking care of yourself. I wish I as there to make you soup.
    Hugs, Tracy

  15. Hurrah Carly! What a beautiful granny square you have made! Honestly, crochet is a complete mystery to me. I keep looking at all the amazing projects on various blogs and I simply wonder 'how on earth do they manage that?'

I am so sorry to read you have been poorly. Do you find you feel low when ill? I have enjoyed reading your previous posts - I have been a rather absent from the bloggersphere recently - and I loved the beautiful photos of spring flowers. When I see the Rhein I can't help but notice how similar it seems to the Loire river where we live.

Big hug to you and I hope the antibiotics kick in very, very soon.

  16. hey - sorry to hear you're feeling poorly - hope you feel more chipper soon.
Now, I only learnt how to crochet last year - and the thing that made the biggest difference to me was thatover Christmas I sat and tried loads of different things from the book 'happy hooker'. I got into some real pickles, got cross, got all tied up....but after a couple of days something just clicked and it all fell into place. Now I totally get it - and can follow a pattern and everything! the book just seemed to explain it really well. I think if I'd just kept coming back to it every now and then it would have taken me years.
Anyway - keep it up - it's SO satisfying!

  17. Yaaaaaaaaaaaaay for the crochet!
Well done, missus- your granny square looks very professional indeed!
My advice would be to keep this special one as a reminder of where you began- make it into a cute coaster (as you suggested) and every time you use it you can remember where your crochet journey began!
But also, make loads more of them! A blanket would be a lovely idea.- the colours you chose are lovely.
They'll be no stopping you now.....
    Have a great week.
    Xx
