Cowboy Dress

Two years ago, I made my first ever dress.  I loved it, and have worn it A LOT!  As soon as the sun comes out, IT comes out.  But, apart from a couple of fancy-dress costumes, I haven’t made any other clothes for myself since.

I’ve always wanted to get into making my own clothes, as I rarely see anything that takes my fancy in the shops.  So I don’t know why it’s taken me so long to have another go.  I think it was partly because I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to do a good job (perhaps the fact that the first dress worked out okay was just a fluke) – and partly because I could get a quicker 'fix’ from making accessories and smaller bits and pieces.

THEN, along came ‘The Great British Sewing Bee'..... and inspired me to get a move on.  What a fantastic series that was!!!  I loved EVERY second of it!!!  As soon as the first show had ended, I got to work planning a dress-making project.  I decided to use the same pattern I’d used for my first dress (New Look 6888).  I used some red and white spotty fabric that I’d had in my stash for a while, and the Cath Kidston cowboy-print fabric that my lovely friend Lisa gave me as a gift a few months ago (you can see the gorgeous goodies she gave me here).

And here’s the dress.....

I LOVE it!!!

And guess what???  I’ve made TWO more garments since.  Show-and-tell sessions to follow shortly, of course.....

  1. Now just look at you Carly!!! Lovely dress...lovely in its simplicity and its gorgeous fabric. I must say I do like the wagons. It looks great on its own and with leggings. It is also going to be really cool for the summer months. I'd say full marks for that dress and look forward to seeing the others.

    keep well

  9. I love it, lovely colour and beautiful dress and you look gorgeous in it. So much nicer than anything in the shops.
I was really inspired by the sewing bee, I fancied having a go at some clothes for the girls and I'd love to make some for me but I'm not sure my sewing is up to it...I need to be brave and go for it I think...I can always unpick lol.

One of the things I love about making your own clothing is it is unique and you can use your favorite materials. I LOVE this dress you made! You did a fantastic job sweetie! You really have a gift for sewing. I don't think I would make a dress like that! It fits you perfectly and I must say you are absolutely gorgeous!!!! Red is a fabulous color for you. I am so glad you could use the fabric your friend gave you. It is a perfect match! I love all of your outfit and this pattern. I will have to look for it and give it a go! Your sewing is perfect! 20. This really is a great combination Carly, and what a great style, looks perfect alone as a sundress but equally good with cardi and leggins. You've inspired me for just what you can do with one of those fabric pieces from Cath Kidson, never would have thought of it in these terms. I see fabric stashing in my future!
